Mom’s Review
This is our family's introduction to Moomin stories. While we recognize the characters' visages, we've never read any stories before. And now, just from this one story, I love Moomin. The characters Jansson created are fanciful, endearing beings concerned with the happenings in their own valley and amongst their friends and neighbors; the cast populating Moomin Valley seems to lead uncomplicated lives. These circumstances are perfect for young children, for whom the world encompasses themselves and their everyday experiences. Moomin and the Golden Leaf is a delightfully written and illustrated book that reassures children of the validity of marveling over the world's smallest offerings while also allowing them to step into the shoes of Moomintroll, who wants to share his discovery but is met with disappointment. Children can empathize with Moomintroll easily and appreciate the kindness shown when a friend offers him the hero's role in the play.

The question of whence a lovely, golden leaf came, and how much everyone would enjoy their own, individual golden leaf, is the focal point of Moomin and the Golden Leaf. I'm sure I'm not the only parent who has acquired many natural treasures such as leaves, acorns, and rocks, so the wonder with which Moomintroll approaches the leaf and searches the forest for its source is not unfamiliar and is sure to resonate with young readers. When Moomintroll eventually locates the leaf's origin - a costume piece for the Autumn Ball - he is disappointed that there is no golden tree, but is immediately and organically integrated into the rehearsal for the play that evening, in a role he is excited about. The cooperation, wonder, and friendship amongst the fantastical inhabitants reflects a young audience's experience while also prompting empathy when Moomintroll encounters trouble.

Moomin and the Golden Leaf
is a marvelous picture book that will capture young readers' attention and imagination, foster empathy, and underscore the wonderment nature inspires.
