Since reading The Once and Future Witches several months ago, I've been interested in reading more about the women's suffrage movement. That led me to to my current non-fiction read: The Woman's Hour. So I am sure you aren't surprised that Dare to Question caught my eye! And what a satisfying book it is - Stirling and Lugo present Catt and the suffrage movement in a clear light; they depict a woman whom little children can understand - someone who is told "no" for no reason she can fathom. Catt's role in the suffrage movement is clearly laid out, with particular emphasis on whom she included in the movement and what actions she took to gain support. Children will be drawn first by the bright, detailed illustrations, and listen (or read), rapt, to the story of how she steered our country toward greater suffrage.

 There are three aspects of Dare to Question that contribute to its impact. 

  • First, the formatting of the pages, where the text placement is integral to the illustrations. A pleasing page setup certainly enhances my enthusiasm when reading a picture book to someone.
  • Second, the complex political agendas and infighting among suffragists are distilled to clarity without sacrificing import. Stirling addresses her intelligent readers at their maturity and comprehension levels, presenting issues in a way that young children will understand.
  • Third, Catt's life is presented in a way that will interest children. By starting with her childhood, Stirling shows that this pivotal historical personage was once in the same position as the audience. Thereafter, moments of import and excitement are narrated, keeping children on the edges of their seats to find out how the vote was ultimately won.
Dare to Question has my vote, to be sure!
