Why we chose this book:
Several topics are always on my radar when seeking out books. Challenging feelings (such as jealousy) is one of them. So when I came across this book about a boy's experience with jealousy, I requested a copy from the publisher, and Groundwood Books obliged.

Mom's Review

A powerful story of love, centered around a tree fort.

When Russell and his father move into a new house, Russell wants to build a tree fort. Although his father isn't handy, he goes along with Russell's plan. The resulting tree fort looks nothing like Russell's plan, but they spend the night there and love it. Soon thereafter, a neighboring house has a contractor and several workmen construct an immense and impressive tree fort. Russell visits it and returns to his home, where he is joined by his father in their tree fort. When his father says, "There will always be a better tree fort," Russell replies, "But not a better dad."

Russell's initial jealousy of his neighbor is never named, but is evident nonetheless. His father's love is similarly apparent.  It is only Russell's recognition of the value of time over monetary investment that is voiced. The message of love is simple and strong. I recommend seeking out The Better Tree Fort.

Son's Review

Mom: What did you think of this book?

Son: I thought that it was a good book.

Mom: Did you have a favorite part?

Son: Nothing in particular.

Mom: How did you feel while reading it?...Was there anything that made you particularly happy?

Son: Happy! How they built their tree fort!!!
(I think 3 exclamation points might not even be enough to convey his volume and excitement.)

Mom: What did you think of the daddy? Why?

Son: He was kind of awesome. I thought he was so awesome because he built it.

Mom: What did you think of Russell? Why?

Son: I thought Russell was kind of good. Because he was in the book, and Russell is a good name for a little boy.

Mom: What is the most important thing to know about The Better Tree Fort?

Son: It's awesome and good. That's what you should write.
